One identical twin with clubfoot but not the other

identical twins clubfoot in one twin

Author: Elysha Loiterton

It’s impossible to fully describe the existential shock of being told you’re pregnant with twins. This is doubly true (pun intended) when you’ve already spawned one child and you were only planning two.

One minute, I was anticipating a whitebread life with two kids, a dog, a cat and a modest car upgrade to a sedan. The next, I was fretting over three lots of childcare fees and rushing out to buy a second hand minivan.

Thank you gifts for NICU and SCN nurses

gifts for SCN nurses

Throughout the year, many twins and triplets will spend some time in the NICU. Some may only be in there for a few days, while others may need to stay weeks or months before they are ready to head home.

During their stay in the NICU they will be loved and supported by the beautiful nurses. These nurses dedicate their time and every ounce of their effort into helping your little babies become healthy. They help you as parents to prepare for the journey, they support you and they become like family.

When it is time to head home with your babies, you may want to show your appreciation to the nurses and thank them for everything they have done. If you are looking at giving them a gift, have a look at some of these thank you gifts for NICU and SCN nurses.

Outnumbered – Twin Poem

poem about twins

Author: Monica Harber

A poem I wrote about what it is like to have twins.

It’s called ‘Outnumbered’ and it’s about just that, being outnumbered.

Outnumbered

There’s more of them than there is of me.
How can I explain so that you can see?
You never experience the transition from one to two.
Instead, it goes straight from me to a few.
It’s reciting their birth order to remember their name.
Having to choose who first to tend to, torments you, fills you with shame.
So many products, places, outings so inaccessible.
The barriers, preparation, and multi-tasking; unimaginable.
You must sacrifice one to put the other in the car.
Checking that vehicles aren’t near but far.
Your needs don’t come second, but third or fourth.
Still, your heart when you cuddle them fills with such warmth.

Reading to twins or triplets

reading books to twins

I don’t know if you ere anything like me when you thought about having a baby?  I pictured myself curled up in a spotless white couch, with my child sitting quietly in my arms as I read them book after book.

And then I had twins.

And I was so busy chasing them in different directions that reading books was so far down the “to do” list that it barely happened.  And then of course I felt guilty I wasn’t reading to them enough.  I knew the benefits of reading books, but it was just too hard!

So how do you go about reading to twins or triplets them ripping the book away and fighting over it?

Remember……….there are NO RULES when it comes to reading to twins and triplets.  You don’t have to read the whole book.  You don’t even have to read the actual book, you can just talk about it and point certain things out, or better still get them to point things out to you.  Just do what you can and do whatever works best for you and your family.

Here are some tips to help.

Managing mastitis for mums of multiples

mastitis with multiples tips

Author: Melissa Hays, Cocoon & Cradle

Managing mastitis for mums of multiples – (I think that’s enough m’s)!

Oh mastitis – what a literal pain. If you are a mum of twins or triplets that wants to avoid mastitis or has mastitis and wants to know what to do next, you’ve come to the right place!

While mastitis is quite common (affecting up to 20% of breastfeeding mums), it is definitely not normal. But before we dive into all of the ins and outs, you may be asking yourself, what even is mastitis?

You may immediately think infection when you think of mastitis, but did you know that mastitis literally means inflammation of the breast. This may or may not involve a bacterial infection.

It’s likely that it goes like this:

Engorgement -> Non-infective Mastitis -> Infective Mastitis -> Breast Abscess

Common signs include a tender, hot and swollen wedge shaped area of breast, which may be associated with a temperature and flu like symptoms.

female libido triplets

Author: Lovehoney Ambassador Chantelle Otten

Everyone’s libido (sex drive) is different and will have peaks and declines over time, this is completely normal and if you are experiencing either you are not alone.

Many things like lifestyles, sleep, stress, anxiety diet and physical wellbeing can all play a part in our sex drives. Pregnancy and motherhood affect most of the things just mentioned. Some women experience a higher sex drive whilst some women experience a lower sex drive after giving birth. The important thing to remember is to not compare yourself to others. Libido is based on what turns you on and how your body responds.

Left hand dominance in twins and triplets

teaching twins to write

Author: Tarryn Dee from My Diffability Australia

Did you know that being left-handed can be the result of genetics as well as your surrounding environment? Males are more likely than females to be left-handed and even more interestingly, in about 20% of identical twins one is right-handed and the other is left-handed.

I am an occupational therapist with over 10 years of experience in helping children to develop their fine motor skills and pre-writing skills. I am here to share some strategies and activities to help with developing hand dominance, and in particular to make things a little easier for the little lefties in our lives. Whether a child is left-handed or right-handed, it is still important for them to develop the use of a tripod pencil grasp.  This grasp is where the index finger and thumb pinch together and rest on the middle finger.
