Finding out we were pregnant with twins

Our story started many years ago when Cathy warned me that for some reason since she was a little girl and dreaming of having kids when an adult, that she would always have twins.  Guess what, we have twins, a boy and a girl.  So, I was forewarned, but not prepared.

That being said at our 6 week scan where we knew we were pregnant and the doctor performs an internal scan; I was standing behind the doctor and could see the screen of the ultrasound machine, he said that’s one embryo, oh and there’s a second one.  I could see the two embryos on the left-hand side of the screen. He announced that he was going to have a look around and all of a sudden there were two embryos on the right-hand side of the screen.  Four.  Cathy will tell you I went white, but I can’t confirm that.  The doctor picked up on our (my) fright and said no there are only two, and that he had turned the probe to a different angle.  As if two embryos was an everyday thing.

Fraternal Twins: Four Continents Equals Two Babies

fraternal twin pregany in egypt

Author: Beth Pettrey

My husband (Matt) and I have fraternal twins (girl/boy), Claire and Owen.

I had a very interesting pregnancy. Claire and Owen were conceived in Spain while on R&R from our jobs on a Gold Mine in Egypt after a very expensive dinner (one that we can no longer afford!). We confirmed I was pregnant by Matt bring home a pregnancy kit from a work trip to the UK because we were living in a small remote town in Egypt at the time. We headed back to Australia on our next R&R break to catch up with our GP. Because we knew the dates we didn’t do a scan at this stage and also the GP said it wasn’t likely to be twins because I had really mild morning sickness. While I felt sick a lot I was only physically sick 4 times and twice of these was after eating slightly under ripe bananas (didn’t do this again after the second event).

Putting together a nursery for twins or more

twin nursery

Putting together a nursery for twins or more can be so much fun.

Congratulations! Not only are you expecting a baby – you are expecting more than one baby!!!

Once you are over the shock, you can start to begin planning the nursery for twins or more. However, before you can start you need to make two important decisions:

1. Where will they sleep when they first come home from hospital? Your room, their room or their own rooms?
2. Once you are past that initial newborn phase, where will they sleep? Will they share a room or will they have their own rooms?

These decisions will obviously depend on the size and layout of your house and personal preference.

Twins conceived using clomid (serophene) | Twin birth story

Twins conceived using Clomid

Author: Anonymous

Behind the apprehension of being parents to twins, we were filled with love and joy and relief that we were growing two healthy little baby boys. Having a bit of a pained history trying to conceive and losing a few of our precious little creations along the way, it seemed fitting to be bringing to life not just one beautiful baby, but two!

Twins conceived using clomid

We had conceived our twins through the drug serophene (more popularly known as clomid), that helps stimulate ovulation. A side effect of the drug includes conceiving (fraternal) multiples due to the release of more than one egg. Due to our history, it is a bit annoying when people ask “do twins run in the family” (the apparently polite way of asking if they’re natural or not), as it dredges up the past which is not really anyone’s business unless I decide it is!

IVF Twins. Our twins were conceived through IVF

We were doing IVF, and had transferred two embryos, so it wasn’t a real surprise as such to find out we were expecting IVF twins. However, it was more than we could have dreamed about. This pregnancy was our 8th attempt at IVF. And each attempt had involved the full shebang with daily injections and an egg collection. One cycle had been successful, with twins, but sadly they were not to be and we lost one at 9 weeks and the other at 11 weeks. So it was not a smooth journey by any means.

I was a serial POAS addict. So I already knew I was pregnant before I had the official blood test at the clinic. However, it was with absolute baited breath that I awaited the test results with that all important HCG number. To my absolute relief it was high, at 976. I had regular blood tests, and the numbers were going up and up. The next month my HCG was 9334. But again, I couldn’t relax until that first scan.

Types of twins and your chances of having multiples

Types of Twins

Finding out you are expecting twins can be a bit of a shock to the system. You go into the appointment hoping to hear a heartbeat and you come out hearing two! One of your first questions may be about the different types of twins.

After you get over the initial shock, you might find that having twins has a lot of upsides. If you were hoping for a family consisting of two children, then you will only have to go through the birthing process once. The other upside is your children will always a have friend and companion to play with and share their life with. Someone who gets them and will always be at the same life stage.
