Let’s start here: this blog is not anti-breastfeeding. In fact, I’m extremely pro breastfeeding — I breastfed my twins for 18 months. But what I’ve learnt, both through personal experience and through conversations with thousands of other parents of multiples, is that when it comes to the pressure to breastfeed twins or triplets, the biggest thing missing from the conversation is compassion — especially for the mother. 

This is about being informed. It’s about understanding both the benefits and the challenges of breastfeeding multiples. It’s about being informed of the options available to breastfeed multiples And most importantly, it’s about giving yourself permission to prioritise your mental health while still doing your absolute best for your babies. 

Understanding Where the Pressure To Breastfeed Twins or Triplets Comes From

When you’re pregnant with twins or triplets, the “Are you planning to breastfeed?” question hits harder than you might expect. It comes from all directions — health professionals, strangers, social media, friends with singletons. And once your babies arrive, the expectation to breastfeed both (or all three!) can feel like it’s crushing you. 

Here are a few places that the pressure to breastfeed twins or triplets can come from: 

Society’s Unrealistic Expectations

The idea of the “perfect mother” is still floating around out there — serene, glowing, peacefully feeding her baby while birds sing in the background. Except you just found out you’re having twins or triplets, and suddenly you’re picturing yourself topless on the couch, trapped under two babies while your cup of tea goes cold and someone’s crying. (Spoiler: it might be you.)

You want the best for your babies. Of course you do. You’ve read about the benefits of breast milk, and you want to give them every advantage. That desire can easily turn into an enormous pressure — especially when things don’t go as smoothly as you’d hoped.

Whether it’s milk supply, latch issues, reflux, tongue ties, or just the logistics of tandem feeding — trying to breastfeed twins or triplets can be physically and emotionally intense. When you’re doing it around the clock and still wondering if it’s enough… it can feel like you’re failing, even when you’re doing everything right.

The Impact on Your Mental Health 

Here’s what we don’t talk about enough: the pressure to breastfeed twins can take a real toll on your mental health.

It’s not just about being tired. It’s the constant second-guessing. The Google spirals at 2am. The worry that you’re not doing enough — even when you’re doing everything you can. 

Stress doesn’t just affect your mindset — it can directly impact your breastfeeding experience, interfering with your let-down reflex or affecting your milk supply, which then leads to… you guessed it, more stress. 

Postnatal Depression and Anxiety 

Parents of multiples are at a higher risk of postnatal depression and anxiety. And while breastfeeding can be a beautiful bonding experience, it can also become a source of guilt and overwhelm. If you’re feeling persistently low, anxious, or detached, please speak to a health professional. You are not alone, and help is available. 

Coping Strategies That Actually Help to Breastfeed Twins or Triplets 

You don’t need to do this alone. And you don’t need to do it perfectly.

Here are some practical, compassionate strategies to reduce the pressure and support your wellbeing: 

Prioritise Self-Care (No, Really) 

You matter too. Eat. Sleep. Move. Rest. Not perfectly — just consistently. Looking after yourself isn’t selfish. It’s the foundation that allows you to care for your babies. 

Build a Village 

Your partner, family, lactation consultant, maternal health nurse, twin parent support group — lean on them. Ask for help. Let someone hold a baby while you shower, someone bring dinner and someone listen. 

Try Mindfulness or Breathwork 

Even just two minutes of deep breathing can reset your nervous system. Apps, YouTube videos, or simply sitting quietly with a cuppa can help you stay grounded.
